Where Does Fragrance Come From?

The beautiful scented products around us contain natural essential oils. Essential oils are substances synthesized by plants using sunlight and water to survive, stored in tiny pockets within flowers, leaves, roots, seeds, and fruits.

However, a vast amount of plants are sacrificed to obtain these precious scents. To produce just one small 10ml bottle of essential oil, it takes 500,000 roses, 1.5 kg of lavender, and 66 lemons.

Sometimes, plants hide their fragrances deep within, making them difficult to find. Sandalwood oil can only be obtained in small quantities by uprooting sandalwood trees that are over 30 years old. Agarwood, known as “oud,” and guaiacwood, known as “guaiac,” have grown popular in the fragrance industry, leading to their rapid decline in the wild. All of these are classified as endangered species by the IUCN.

Globally, around 80,000 species of plants and animals are used for fragrance and therapy, with 15,000 of them facing the risk of extinction.

Is Sustainable Fragrance Possible?

FRA422 distinguishes between fragrance ingredients that can be enjoyed and those that must be preserved. We propose 7 principles of sustainable fragrance to create harmony between nature and people.

Usable and Non-Usable Fragrances

Usable Fragrances (422 CODE) – Natural essential oils from plants classified as Least Concern (LC) or Near Threatened (NT) are used under the 7 principles of sustainability. The certification mark “422 CODE” signifies that these ingredients are safe to use.

Non-Usable Fragrances (422 FRAGRANCE) – For fragrance ingredients from species classified as Vulnerable (VU) or higher on the IUCN Red List, we replace them with sustainable, similar plant species. Through extensive scientific research, we create 422 Fragrance, a carefully crafted alternative so refined that it’s indistinguishable from the original scent.

The 422 CODE Design System helps promote the use of sustainable fragrances.
